Introducing the Nothing Phone (1): The mid-range smartphone of the future

The upcoming Nothing Phone (1), designed and developed by the company Nothing, is a mid-range smartphone that will be released sometime in July 2022. While the Nothing Phone (1) may not have all the features found on higher-end smartphones, it promises to deliver an impressive user experience thanks to its unique design, powerful hardware and impressive camera capabilities.

Design & Materials

The Nothing Phone (1) has an all-aluminium body that is both lightweight and durable, yet with just enough polycarbonate to ensure it feels good in your hand. It also has Corning Gorilla Glass 5 protection for the display. The 6.55-inch OLED display boasts a 1080x2400 FHD+ resolution with a peak brightness of 1200cd/m², a contrast ratio of 1000000:1, and a refresh rate of 120 Hz. The display features HDR10+ support, and it offers a usable surface of 85.3%, giving users plenty of screen real estate to work with.

The audio performance on the Nothing Phone (1) is further enhanced by the two front-facing stereo speakers. Meanwhile, the power button at the side of the phone also doubles as a fingerprint reader, allowing users to quickly unlock their device and securely store their sensitive information.

Hardware

Under the hood, the Nothing Phone (1) is powered by Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 778G+ (SM7325-AE) processor, which is based on a 6nm process. It is complemented by 8GB or 12GB of LPDDR5 RAM and 128GB or 256GB of UFS 3.1 storage. On AnTuTu’s version 9 benchmark, the Nothing Phone (1) scored an impressive 551150 points.

Camera

The dual-camera system on the Nothing Phone (1) consists of a main 50.0MP Sony IMX766 sensor with f/1.88 aperture and a secondary 50.0MP Samsung S5KJN1 wide-angle and macro lens with a f/2.2 aperture. The main camera has optical stabilization (OIS), and it can record 4K videos. Meanwhile, the ultra-wide-angle lens has a 114º field-of-view (FOV) and it’s capable of capturing macro shots up to 4cm away from the lens. For selfies, the Nothing Phone (1) has a 16.0MP Sony IMX471 Exmor RS sensor with f/2.2 aperture.

Connectivity & Battery

The Nothing Phone (1) supports Bluetooth 5.2, dual SIM, NFC, WiFi 6 (802.11ax), and GPS (L1+L5). As for the battery, it has a 4500mAh capacity with 33.0W fast charge support and wireless charging. It also supports reverse charging, so you can use it to charge other devices.

Conclusion

The Nothing Phone (1) is a great mid-range smartphone that packs an impressive list of features into an attractive, lightweight design. It excels in the camera department, with its dual-camera setup capable of capturing sharp images and stunning 4K videos. The display is also excellent, thanks to its OLED panel and HDR10+ support. The only downside is that the Nothing Phone (1) lacks water and dust protection and doesn’t have a telephoto lens. The lack of gaming performance is also a bit of a letdown. Nevertheless, for everything else, the Nothing Phone (1) is sure to provide a great user experience.

What is a Ki score?
Ki is an automatic score based on the specifications and prices of devices. It is calculated using over 200 variables to rank smartphones, tablets and other devices from best to worst.
How do we calculate the Ki?

In this case, to determine the score we evaluate 5 general aspects:

  • Design and screen
  • Hardware and performance
  • Camera
  • Connectivity
  • Battery

Once these 5 factors have been rated, we introduce the price variable. This means that any two devices with the same ratings get a different Ki score for quality vs price.

Even a device objectively worse than another may have a higher Ki score if it has a better price.

Does the Ki score change?

The Ki varies as time goes by. As new devices with better specifications enter the market the Ki score of older devices will go down, always being compensated of their decrease in price.
