About this comparison

The POCO X8 Pro and Xiaomi Redmi Note 17 Pro Max are two ambitious mid-range smartphones arriving in 2026, each offering a different balance between performance, display quality, photography and battery endurance. The POCO X8 Pro is scheduled for release in March 2026, while the Redmi Note 17 Pro Max follows in August 2026.

POCO’s X8 Pro is clearly aimed at users who value flagship-like speed in a more affordable category. It is powered by the 4nm MediaTek Dimensity 8500 Ultra processor, supported by either 8GB or 12GB of LPDDR5X RAM. Storage options include 256GB and 512GB using fast UFS 4.1 technology. Its AnTuTu v11 score of 2,285,536 suggests considerably stronger performance than many conventional mid-range handsets, making it a compelling option for demanding games, multitasking and intensive applications. A dedicated cooling system should also help it sustain performance during longer gaming sessions.

Its 6.59-inch AMOLED display has a sharp 1268 x 2756 QHD resolution, a 120Hz refresh rate and HDR10+ support. With an 8,000,000:1 contrast ratio, it should provide deep blacks, vivid colours and strong visual impact for films, games and social media. The screen occupies 89.4% of the front, while the combination of glass and metal materials gives the handset a more premium construction than many rivals in the category. Stereo speakers and a noise-cancellation microphone further improve its entertainment and calling credentials.

The POCO X8 Pro uses a dual rear camera arrangement led by a 50-megapixel Sony IMX882 main sensor with an f/1.5 aperture and optical image stabilisation. It is accompanied by an 8-megapixel ultra-wide camera, while selfies are handled by a 20-megapixel front camera. The presence of OIS and 4K video recording should make it a capable everyday camera phone, particularly in challenging lighting conditions. Its 6,500mAh battery is substantial, and 100W fast charging should minimise time spent connected to the mains. Reverse charging adds useful flexibility for powering accessories.

The Xiaomi Redmi Note 17 Pro Max takes a slightly different route. Its 6.83-inch pOLED display is larger and has an even more impressive 91.2% usable front surface. It offers a 120Hz refresh rate, HDR10+ and Corning Gorilla Glass Victus 2 protection. Although its 1280 x 2772 resolution is classified as FHD+, it should still look crisp at normal viewing distances. Stereo speakers with Dolby Atmos support make it especially attractive for streaming and gaming.

Powered by the Snapdragon 6 Gen 5 chipset, the Redmi achieves an AnTuTu v11 score of 1,008,000. This remains strong for a mid-range phone, although it is notably behind the POCO in raw processing power. It offers 8GB or 12GB of LPDDR5X RAM and storage choices of 128GB, 256GB or 512GB, all using UFS 4.1. Like the POCO, it features an in-display fingerprint sensor and cooling system.

The Redmi’s main attraction is its enormous 9,210mAh battery, paired with 100W charging. This could make it one of the strongest options for users prioritising multi-day battery life. Its camera system includes a 50-megapixel Samsung S5KJN5 main sensor with OIS and an 8-megapixel ultra-wide lens, although its 8-megapixel selfie camera is less ambitious than the POCO’s. Overall, the POCO X8 Pro favours performance and premium display quality, while the Redmi Note 17 Pro Max stands out for its huge battery, large screen and durable display protection.
