The Google Pixel 7 and Pixel 7 Pro: A side-by-side comparison of the two upcoming phones from Google

Google has had a torrid time with their Android smartphones, from the debacle of taking on Apple with the Pixel 1 to the discontinuation of the Pixel 5 lineup. Now, they are gearing up for the launch of two new flagship models: the Google Pixel 7 and Pixel 7 Pro.

Design & Materials

The Google Pixel 7 and Pixel 7 Pro will be sporting similar designs with an aluminium alloy back and Corning Gorilla Glass Victus protection. The Pixel 7 will house a 6.30” OLED display and the Pro a slightly bigger 6.70” OLED screen. The screens will boast fantastic colour depths and rich colour accuracy with a maximum brightness of 1000 cd/m2, HDR10+ support and a contrast ratio of 1000000:1. The usable surface area of the Pixel 7 is 83.7%, while that of the Pixel 7 Pro is 87.9%.

Under the hood, both models will come with the Microsoft Tensor 2 Processor built on a 5nm architecture. While the Pixel 7 will have 8GB of RAM, the Pro model will feature 12GB of RAM. The storage options vary between the two. The Pixel 7 will come in 128GB and 256GB variants while the Pro version has 128GB, 256GB and 512GB options. In terms of AnTuTu benchmark scores, the Pixel 7 should exceed 768335 whereas the Pro should reach 831716.

Camera

The camera technology of the Pixel 7 and Pro models differ in terms of lens configurations. The Pixel 7 comes with a dual camera setup comprising a Samsung GN1 50Mpx main lens with a f/1.85 aperture and a Sony IMX381 Exmor RS 12Mpx wide angle lens with a f/2.2 aperture. It also comes with a selfie camera with a 10.8Mpx sensor and f/2.2 aperture. Optical Stabilization (OIS), 4K video recording, 8x digital zoom and 114° field of view are supported.

On the Pro, you get a triple camera setup with a Samsung GN1 50Mpx main lens (f/1.85) as well as a Sony IMX381 Exmor RS 12Mpx wide angle lens (f/2.2) and a Samsung S5KGM1 48Mpx telephoto lens (f/3.5). The selfie camera remains shared between the two devices boasting a 10.8Mpx sensor with f/2.2 aperture. The Pro boasts improved optics with a 125.8° field of view and 5x optical zoom along with a Super Res Zoom of up to 30x.

Connectivity

Both phones come with Bluetooth 5.2, Dual SIM, USB Host 3.0, NFC, and WiFi 6 (802.11ax) support as well as eSIM compatibility.

Battery

The battery capacity on the Pixel 7 is listed at 4355mAh with support for 30W fast charging and wireless charging. The Pixel 7 Pro, meanwhile, comes with a 5000mAh battery along with the same fast charging and wireless charging features. Both phones also come with reverse charging capabilities.

In conclusion, despite the similarities between the two devices, the Google Pixel 7 Pro clearly offers several improvements over its smaller sibling. From the larger screen size to the higher RAM, more storage options and better camera hardware, the Pro is undoubtedly the superior device. That said, the Pixel 7 still has plenty to offer and should fit the bill for most users.
