About this comparison

Introduction With technology advancing at an ever-increasing pace, it’s no surprise that the market for smartphones is consistently growing and developing. There are now two distinct categories of phones available – high-end and mid-range. In this article, we will look at two new phones from Samsung, the Galaxy A54 5G and the Galaxy S22, both of which are scheduled for release in 2021/2022. We will discuss their design and materials, hardware, cameras, connectivity and battery.

Design & Materials The Samsung Galaxy A54 5G has a 6.4-inch Super AMOLED screen with a 1080x2340 FHD+ resolution and a 120 Hz refresh rate. It has a glass and plastic build and an 82.4% usable surface. The Galaxy S22 has a 6.1-inch AMOLED screen with the same 1080x2340 FHD+ resolution but with a peak brightness of 1300 cd/m² and a 2000000:1 contrast ratio. It also has HDR10+ capability. It has an aluminum alloy and glass build and a 88.2% usable surface. As such, the S22 provides a slightly better display than the A54 5G.

Hardware The A54 5G is powered by the Exynos 1380 5nm processor and is available with either 6GB or 8GB of LPDDR4X RAM. It is paired with either 128GB or 256GB of UFS 2.0 storage. The AnTuTu score is 507000 and it has a Fingerprint Display scanner for security. On the other hand, the S22 is powered by the Samsung Exynos 2200 4nm processor and comes with 8GB of LPDDR5 RAM. It is available with 128GB or 256GB of UFS 3.1 storage. Its AnTuTu score is 889845 and it also has a Fingerprint Display scanner. Overall, the S22 has the stronger set of hardware specifications.

Camera Both phones have a triple camera setup. The A54 5G has a standard camera that uses the Sony IMX766 sensor with 50.0MPx and f/1.8 aperture, a wide-angle lens that uses the Samsung S5K3L6 sensor with 13.0MPx and f/2.2 aperture and a macro lens with 5.0MPx and f/2.4 aperture. For selfies, it has a Sony IMX616 sensor with 32.0MPx and f/2.0 aperture. It also has optical stabilization (OIS) and can record 4K video. The S22 also has a triple camera setup. Its standard camera uses the Samsung GN5 sensor with 50.0MPx and f/1.8 aperture, its wide-angle lens uses the Sony IMX713 sensor with 12.0MPx and f/2.2 aperture and its telephoto lens uses the Sony IMX772 sensor with 12.0MPx and f/2.4 aperture. It can record 4K and 8K video, has an ultra-wide angle of 120º, has PDAF and OIS and has a 3x optical zoom. Its selfie camera has 10.0MPx and f/2.2 aperture with 1.220 pixel size.

Connectivity Both phones support Dual SIM, NFC, WiFi 6 (802.11ax) and eSIM. The Galaxy A54 5G also supports Bluetooth 5.3 and the S22 supports Bluetooth 5.2. The S22 additionally supports Samsung DeX and Samsung Wireless DeX.

Battery The A54 5G has a 5000mAh battery and supports fast charging at 25.0W. The S22 has a smaller 3700mAh battery but also supports fast charging at 25.0W, as well as wireless charging.

Conclusion The Samsung Galaxy A54 5G and the Samsung Galaxy S22 are both powerful devices, suitable for a wide range of users. The A54 5G is slightly more affordable, while the S22 has more advanced hardware and features, including a better display, higher performance, a better camera system, additional connectivity options and a slightly bigger battery despite being cheaper.
