  • Good but could have been better

I've bought this phone before the launch of the Pixel 8, and got it for a quite good deal. The phone overall feels great in hand, the cameras are superb for both photo and video, updates are plenty and the performance hasn't really changed in the last 2 1/2 years of ownership.
There are a few cons though, especially when talking about thermals. It will sometimes overheat when doing absolutely nothing, or when changing the wallpaper. In the summer is when the overheating really hinders the experience; I've had a few occasions when the GPS navigation wouldn't work whatsoever because the phone was "too warm". And the battery isn't holding that much fuel but that's expected. Another weird issue is that sometimes it can't quite decide if it should play music and videos from both speakers or only the bottom-firing speaker.
The worst one for me is the features set: Now Playing isn't super useful in Romania, most of the AI functions aren't available even if the phone is capable of running them (for example, AI Wallpapers work if you manually install the app), and then the customisation side is lackluster compared to Samsung, Xiaomi, etc.
Over all, it's still quite a good phone for my use case, though I would probably look for another option in the future from another manufacturer.

    Pros
    • Nice, compact size
    • Good quality display with vivid colours
    • Great camera setup, support for 4k@60fps
    • Plenty of major updates and security updates
    Cons
    • Poor thermal throttling
    • Average charging speed

  • A promise for google magic that is neither magic or exclusive

I was pretty disappointed with this phone... The performance while satisfactory for everyday-use can feel lackluster in more demanding scenarios, and the thermals are truly abysmal... I live in a place with pretty hot summers, and the usability of the phone when it gets hot is thrown out of the window, with lags, screen freezes, or ghost inputs that are not there.
Yes the camera is amazing, and the OS is simply beautiful, but then I don't feel the promised Google magic of yore is present... The fancy features Google presents in their I/O conferences are mostly available in the US, where most of the world is not, and almost everything else can also be used on other devices. Also the battery is dreadful... I get half a day of normal use, and I am still around 80% health.
I am not disappointed to the degree that I will sell the phone right away and get something else, let us not be ungrateful, it is a very good phone, with good daily performance and amazing cameras, so that I cannot justify forcing an upgrade.
However the features and value of this phone is not what I anticipated to be...

  • Great overall.

It's a lovely compact device that you can get for cheap on the used market, if you don't mind a bit of a smaller battery along with shorter battery life you would be satisfied with the pixel 7, it has a great camera system, a very good display (fragile), and amazing built quality.

  • Just bought Nov 24, Very ok phone

Fast face unlock and okish fingerprint sensor, which however does not function in low light, dry or wet fingers, potentially a problem for banking and medical services. Got this phone cheap on eBay to replace an iPhone - I hate iOS, and despite fingerprint issues, loving being back on android. Cameras also very good- I think better than the ex iPhone 13 Pro. From other reviews I was thinking charging would be intolerably slow, but actually faster than 13P including wirelessly, so no complaints from me on this and I am getting circa 10-11 hours SOT per Accubattery, so no complaints from me, when I was getting 5.5 on my IP13P. Only downer so far is screen is already showing long sweeping surface marks despite me handling so super carefully, and I see from Reddit forums this is a much discussed issue with this phone! What is it with Google cheaping out on hardware? This is unacceptable and I would be even more bummed if I had paid a new price! Nonetheless in late 24 the low eBay used prices for this phone are a total no-brainer.

    Pros
    • Battery life
    • Charging speed ok

What is a Ki score?
Ki is an automatic score based on the specifications and prices of devices. It is calculated using over 200 variables to rank smartphones, tablets and other devices from best to worst.
How do we calculate the Ki?

In this case, to determine the score we evaluate 5 general aspects:

  • Design and screen
  • Hardware and performance
  • Camera
  • Connectivity
  • Battery

Once these 5 factors have been rated, we introduce the price variable. This means that any two devices with the same ratings get a different Ki score for quality vs price.

Even a device objectively worse than another may have a higher Ki score if it has a better price.

Does the Ki score change?

The Ki varies as time goes by. As new devices with better specifications enter the market the Ki score of older devices will go down, always being compensated of their decrease in price.
