- Old, but somewhat usable
After the Samsung Galaxy Note 7 tragedy, the Galaxy Note 8 emerged as a redemption device. Despite being nearly 8 years old by 2025, the phone remains somewhat usable.
Equipped with 6GB of RAM and approximately 64GB of storage, it still delivers decent smoothness for basic applications. However, due to its outdated architecture and aging technology, the device struggles with heat management. It overheats quickly, leading to severe performance drops. Many browser apps can cause excessive overheating, and the battery drains rapidly. Gaming is virtually impossible, as it struggles to maintain even 5 FPS on lightweight games like Bee Swarm Simulator, with temperatures soaring to 50°C.
The camera is basic but still capable of producing acceptable results for casual use. However, if battery life is your priority, this phone is not ideal. Its 3,300mAh battery, already considered small in 2017, barely lasts a full 4 hours in 2025. Unlike iOS devices, the Note 8 lacks effective battery optimization, which further limits its longevity. It's important to note that this phone was released just months after the Note 7 disaster, so compromises were likely made.
The phone's stability is extremely poor; the edges are highly vulnerable and fragile, making the screen prone to cracking after just a few drops. It comes with a stylus pen that allows you to draw if desired. The stylus is compatible not only with the Note 8 but also confirmed to work with the S21 Ultra and some older Galaxy Fold devices. It will not work in later models.
On the bright side, the Note 8 supports custom ROMs, making it a favorite among tech enthusiasts. Installing custom ROMs is extremely easy, and the XDA community offers several decent options. Impressively, as of 2025, there are even Android 14 ROMs available for the device, extending its usability for those willing to tinker.
The Note 9 offers a significantly better battery life, users have successfully installed One UI 6 on that device.Pros- still usable even nearly a decade old
