About this comparison

Google Pixel 6 Pro and Google Pixel 7: A Comparative Analysis of Two High-end Smartphones

Google’s Pixel line of high-end smartphones has been gaining popularity since its introduction in 2016. The latest additions to the Pixel range are the Google Pixel 6 Pro and Google Pixel 7, both expected to be released in October 2021 and October 2022, respectively. Both phones have some common core features such as Google’s AI-driven Tensor processors and their respective UFS Storage 3.1, but there are also significant differences that set them apart. In this article, we will compare the two smartphones to help you make an informed decision when purchasing a new phone.

Design & Materials

Starting off with the design, the two phones are very similar in terms of weight and size. The Pixel 6 Pro weighs 188g, and measures 162.3 x 75.2 x 8.9mm, while the Pixel 7 is slightly lighter at 181g and measures 160.8 x 74.4 x 8.4mm. However, the 6 Pro has a larger 6.71-inch OLED display compared to the 7's 6.30-inch OLED screen. The 6 Pro also offers a higher QHD+ screen resolution (1440x3120) than the 7's FHD+ resolution (1080x2400), as well as an increased refresh rate (120Hz vs 90Hz).

Both phones have Corning Gorilla Glass Victus for extra protection, however, the 6 Pro uses aluminium alloy for construction and has a slightly larger usable surface (88.4% compared to the 7's 83.7%). Furthermore, the 6 Pro also has stereo speakers, whereas the 7 has noise cancellation microphones.

Hardware

The hardware is where the two phones really begin to differ, starting with their respective processors. The 6 Pro is powered by the Google Tensor 5nm processor, while the 7 is equipped with the more advanced Tensor 2 processor. Additionally, the 6 Pro has 12GB RAM paired with 128GB, 256GB and 512GB storage options, compared to the 7's 8GB RAM and 128GB, 256GB storage options.

The 6 Pro also has a higher AnTuTu benchmark score (735300 vs 768335), as well as a fingerprint display scanner for added security. The 7 however, has a better cooling system, ensuring optimal performance.

Camera

The camera setup is another area where the two phones differ significantly. The google Pixel 6 Pro has a triple camera setup consisting of a 50.0Mpx Samsung GN1 main sensor with f/1.85 aperture, a 12.0Mpx Sony IMX386 Exmor RS wide angle lens with f/2.2 aperture and a 48.0Mpx Sony IMX586 Exmor RS telephoto lens with f/3.5 aperture. It also offers 4K video and 4K 60fps recording, 4x optical zoom and optical stabilization (OIS).

The Google Pixel 7 meanwhile, only has a dual camera setup with a 50Mpx Samsung GN1 main sensor with f/1.85 aperture and a 12.0Mpx Sony IMX381 Exmor RS wide-angle lens with f/2.2 aperture. It also offers 8x digital zoom and 114° field of view. For the selfie shooter, the 6 Pro has an 11.1Mpx camera with f/2.2 aperture while the 7 has a 10.8Mpx camera with f/2.2 aperture.

Connectivity & Battery

In terms of connectivity, both phones offer Bluetooth 5.2, Dual SIM, USB Host 3.0, NFC, WiFi 6 (802.11ax) and eSIM. However, the 6 Pro also has just on select markets, see your carrier for details, while the 7 does not.

Finally, when it comes to battery life, the 6 Pro has a larger capacity of 5000mAh and fast charging of 30W, as well as wireless charging and reverse charging capabilities. Meanwhile, the 7 has smaller 4355mAh battery and less fast charging of 30W, but still offers wireless and reverse charging.

Overall, the Google Pixel 6 Pro and Pixel 7 offer impressive features and specifications for two high-end smartphones, with the 6 Pro offering a number of additional benefits over its predecessor.
